Sunday Worship - Spirit of the Living God

The boys and I heard this song recently driving to piano lessons.  It really is a simple song but with a good message.

Our Week in Photos #25

Here's a look back at our week in photos:

On Sunday we met friends from out of state for lunch.  I haven't seen them in 29 years.  It was such a special visit!

On Monday, Nate tested for his Green belt.  This kid loves Tae Kwon Do and it shows.
On Tuesday, we met friends at our local state park beach.  Those three standing WAY out in the distance - those are three of the kids HA!

On Thursday we got to see Snakes at the library.  Nate loved it; Josh liked it; I tolerated it!!  (Snakes are not my thing!)

Thursday night ended VBS at our church.  the boys had a great time!

It was a fun busy week with swimming thrown in a couple of days too.  Now we are looking forward to a family reunion, my brother and his family coming to visit and the 4th of July holiday!

Summer Fun Week 4

How are we four weeks into summer?  I'm not quite sure.  It's been a beautiful summer - rainy - but beautiful.  Shoot, we hadn't even put the AC units in as of this past weekend and that was the latest that has ever happened!  Looking ahead, though, with upper 80 temps this coming week, I started putting them in on Monday.  It's hard to want to do anything if the house is hot and we are all sweating!  Anyway, here's what was planned and what we did this past week!

Thursday - The Library program and Theater Class. Both of these things happened just as planned :-)

Friday - Swimming and then Nate wants to go see some classmates test for their black belts. We did both of these things.

Saturday - Just a quiet day - swimming if the weather is nice otherwise just hanging at home. We enjoyed swimming - the pool was super busy but it was a perfect day to swim!

Sunday - my mom and I are going to meet long time friends for lunch and VBS starts tonight This was an amazing thing - visiting with long time friends was just amazing and the boys enjoyed VBS.

Monday - Nate has TKD testing tonight while Josh is going to VBS. This went just as planned.

Tuesday - If the weather is nice, we are going to swim and then VBS in the evening. We actually met friends at the State campground beach and the kids played together there.  Then we went to VBS at night.

Wednesday - Today is going to be "quiet" maybe swimming or maybe not.  VBS in the evening.  We did go swimming - it was a perfect day for it!  And, we brought one of the boys friends with us too.  Then, of course, VBS>

Summer Goal Progress

Here's a quick look at what was accomplished in June! I feel like it looks like I didn't do much but yet I feel like I did - we've been busy with a variety of things . . .just not all of these things!
1. Scrapbooking
--- Figure out how many page protectors I need to completely finish albums. I did this and have it noted so I can order when I can.

--- Spend about 4 hours a month specifically scrapbooking.  I want to carve out schedule time to scrapbook.  I'm hoping for at least one 4 hour block each month. The month isn't done but . . I have a busy few days so this won't happen this month.
2. Desks - Work with the boys to completely clean out their school desks so they are ready for the fall; also do a complete clean out of my desk so it's nice an organized once again.
3. Clean the garage and organize it completely.
4. Clean out the playroom and organize everything
5. Clean out the boys rooms and help them organize all of their stuff.
6. Continue work in the basement - a lot of progress has been made but still more to do!
-- In June we cleaned the laundry room and got a new washer/dryer; got the dehumidifers going!; and cleaned up the "playroom" (really it's toy storage - no one wants to play there HA)
7. Clean out my flower bed and plant the sunflower seeds Done
8. Read 6 books throughout the summer.  Setting the bar low!
9. Take year end photos of the boys Done
10. Take School photos of the boys (End of August)
11. Learn a piano song for July (have to play the piano for church)
12. Learn my special for July (Have to sing at church)
13. Make the elusive dentist appointment HA!
14. Order Halloween Costumes (yes, I do this in the summer before prices start to climb!)
15. Plan two birthdays and Christmas (I like to plan by the end of August to make it easier to accomplish everything)
16. Bake and Cook something new.  Specifically I'd like to try making Macarons. Those delicious little French pastries.  I also have a few great cookbooks I'd like to try a few things from as well.

Sunday Worship - Dream Small

We live in a society where everyone always says "Dream Big"!  or "You Can do Anything you Want!"  . . ..well, sometimes it is ok to dream small too.

Our Week in Photos #24

I'll be honest, I thought I took more photos this week but apparently I did not!

This past weekend was Father's Day - we hung around home, enjoyed dinner at my mom's on Saturday, and Burgers on the grill on Sunday.
Monday, Josh got his hair cut and then we hung out at my mom's for lunch and a bit after that.
Tuesday the boys went to the Orthodontist.
Wednesday was a quiet, rainy day
Finally, Thursday!!!

On Thursday we went to the library summer program - Stormy the Magician.  He always makes me laugh.
The boys also went to theater class but there are no photos of that.

On Friday we went swimming first.
Then, Nate wanted to go see two of his class mates test for their black belts so he and I went to that.  Wow.  I thought I would be bored but it was the opposite - it is so impressive to see all these two young men had to know and do.  I told Nate that I was stressed out and it wasn't even HIM testing HA!

So it was a fun week - just lacking in photos!

Weekly Menu

Welcome to another week of eating!  This is a pretty quiet week coming up.  Summer seems to be running a little slow this year which is actually kind of nice.  I have a feeling though that July is going to come and surprise us all!

Friday - Crock-pot Ziti and Garlic Bread

Saturday - I think we might grill . .. maybe :-)

Sunday - So, VBS starts tonight at church so we need to leave home by 5:25.  That means that meals have to kid friendly and easy.  Tacos it is!

Monday - We have VBS for Josh and TKD for Nate.  Pizza and Mac and Cheese makes everyone happy

Tuesday - VBS!  Chicken Nuggets and Fries

Wednesday - VBS! Spaghetti :-)

Thursday - VBS! Pizza and Mac and Cheese (again) because it's the boys favorites :-)

Now, looking at this menu, it is possible that Darryl and I might treat ourselves out one night (Like $5.00 box meals from Taco Bell HA!)  since the kids will have to eat at 5:00 every night.

Summer Fun Week 3

Wow, third week of summer!  I really enjoy summer (not 100 degree days though!) and I find that with homeschool that fills our days during the school year, it makes summer more special because we are tied to books and desks.  I will say that I think last week was probably the busiest week of our summer and things will slow down as the weeks progress!!  Here's the plan for the coming week

Thursday - Today is the last day of Running Club (my kids are so tired!).  I also have book club in the evening so the boys are going to have dinner with my mom. This day went just as planned.  The boys WERE tired by the end of Thursday.

Friday - Today the boys are going to a one day Vacation Bible School that they are super excited about! This day also went as planned :-)

Saturday - I "think" Darryl is taking this day off so we will celebrate Father's Day with him. We hung out at home and then had dinner at my mom's

Sunday - We tend to keep Sundays kind of quiet.  If the weather is nice we will go swimming; if not we will just crash at home! We crashed at home after church and lunch.

Monday - Josh is getting his hair cut; Nate has Tae Kwon Do. We added a few things - we had lunch at my moms followed by running some errands.  So we had a busy day.

Tuesday - The boys have orthodontist appointments to get their expanders.  Neither one is looking forward to this day so we will probably just come home. Dentist appointments went well and then we ended the day with swimming at the pool since it was a perfect day!

Wednesday - Swimming if the weather will cooperate! The weather did not cooperate so we just hung out at home.  The power went out just before time to make dinner so we ended up having to grab something out (no, I wasn't heartbroken HA!)   It was a pretty quiet day.

Year End Photos!

I always love to see photos from the beginning of the school year and the end of the school year.  The changes in the boys isn't always noticeable day by day but seeing photos 9 months apart - wow.  I will admit though that this year, I already knew how much they had changed because they both jumped 3 sizes in clothes and about 4 sizes in shoes over the past school year.  Still - I love seeing them grow!

Nate - September 2018 at the start of 3rd grade
Nate - June 2018 at the end of 3rd grade.
Josh - September 2018 at the start of 4th grade
Josh - June 2018 at the end of 4th grade.

Our Week in Photos #23

Here's a peek at our week!

On Sunday the boys had an amazing Piano Recital on Sunday.  They were both nervous but did a great job.
Monday night Nate had Tae Kwon Do.  He loves it and does such a great job!

On Tuesday we had our year end picnic with our online school.  It was a perfect day for the Fun Run, great activities, swimming in the lake, and hanging out at the splashpad!
On Wednesday the boys had running club (sorry no photos!) and we got our new washer and dryer.
The boys also had running club on Thursday (again no photos!)

On Friday the boys attended a VBS for the day.  This photo is of Josh as a "Ninja" - actually all the kids got headbands to match their team.  :-)

So, we had a busy, fun week!

Weekly Menu

Since I didn't post a menu last week I thought I'd make sure that I share what we actually ate because I know that you all wait to see just that HA!  Plus, I'm trying to get "my groove" back and plan meals again!

Friday - Hamburgers and Potato Salad

Saturday - We are celebrating Father's Day!  I'll let Darryl pick what he wants to eat today - whether we grill or go out - it's up to him!

Sunday - Pineapple Barbecue Chicken, Rice, and Broccoli

Monday - Sloppy Joes and French Fries

Tuesday - Chicken on the grill, Crash Potatoes, Fried Zucchini and Garlic Bread

Wednesday - Pulled Pork, Mac and Cheese, Green Beans, and Rolls

Thursday - Pulled Pork Pastry Puffs, Fries and Salad

And what we actually ate last week:

Friday - We really did eat Brats and Papa Fries

Saturday - I picked up a Rotisserie Chicken, Potato Salad, and Chips for Darryl and I; Mac and Cheese and Pizza for the boys (One loves pizza and one loves Mac and Cheese HA!)

Sunday - My mom made lunch!

Monday - Tacos :-)

Tuesday - We had a field trip today and the last thing I ever want to do after going all day long is cook so we stopped and picked up a Papa Murphy's Pizza to throw in the oven once we were home.

Wednesday - Spaghetti :-)

Thursday - The boys ate with my mom as I had book club!

Summer Fun - Week 2

This weeks list will have a slight overlap because I needed to shift it by a day!  This is our first official week without any school hanging over us.  Our extra friends are still in school this week though so we are enjoying that even though we look forward to fun this summer with them too!

Thursday (I shared this last week) - We had the board meeting :-)

Friday - Swimming! The weather was perfect.  My mom treated us to a picnic lunch and then we swam for a few hours.  Despite our 50 SPF sunscreen, our un-sunkissed skin got a bit pink!

Saturday - There are a few things on the "maybe" list but honestly, I think we will stick close to home. I spent some time in the basement doing some cleaning/organizing.  Due to our sun-kissed skin, we decided to not swim today.

Sunday - It's piano recital day! Today was church, lunch at my mom's, relaxing, and then the boys piano recital.

Monday - Nothing :-) We actually have a busy week so I'm keeping today clear.  Rain is in the forecast so we will just stick close to home; maybe organize the boys room some; maybe not.  Or Maybe I'll look at my goal list and pick something easy to check off (Like counting page protectors HA!) We did this - well I went to the store, did laundry, and finished up a few things to get ready for our new washer and dryer.  It was actually a busy day but a good one.

Tuesday - Today is our Year End Field Trip with Connections Academy! As always, this was a fun day at the park!

Wednesday - Running Club! Today was the first day of running club for the boys (this missed Tuesday due to our field trip!).  Our friends had a half day and my washer and dryer were delivered so it was a busy day!

The boys did not start their "summer schedule" I wrote about last week.  Our week, with the exception of Monday, is busy every single day.  They will be draggin' by Friday evening so I didn't add more to their plate.

Summer Time Lunches

This is the last week of school for our (not-so) little friends so next week it will be time to fix lunch for four munchkins instead of two!  With my kids, I'll admit, I get into a serious rut of serving 2-3 different lunches over and over again.  When I'm feeding extra kids, I feel more responsibility to provide a few more options.  Truth be told, though, kids really like what they like and often could eat those few foods 2-3 times a week.  Needless to say, I've spent some time on Pinterest looking for some inspiration and I came across Family Fresh Meals which shared over 30 Summer Camp Lunch Ideas.

Not only are there a few "main dish" ideas I will use from this list there are some great "sides" too.  I think sometimes I struggle with what to serve with things other than chips so having some other ideas will be helpful.  Only one of the four likes salads - the rest are a little harder to please!

Here's this list I've come up with for main dishes.  Ultimately, I'd like about 10 lunch ideas - so a two week rotation.

1. Corn Dogs
2. Pizza - I have a couple of new recipes to try for different styles of pizza plus just regular frozen pizza are all options!
3. Spaghetti
4. Waffles or Pancakes
5. Sandwiches
6. Tacos
7. Meatballs
8. Chicken Nuggets
9. Mini Ham and Cheese Sandwiches
10. Sloppy Joes/Pulled Pork/Pulled Chicken
11. Lunchables - store bought lunchables are my go to lunch anytime we are going away - a picnic in the park, a field trip, anything like that just to keep life easy!

You might notice that Mac and Cheese is missing.  I have one child (my own!) who has very specific tastes so I'm reserving Mac and Cheese (his favorite) to serve on days I make things he doesn't like.  Sometimes he will get Mac and Cheese and sometimes a Peanut Butter Sandwich.  Just depends on the day (and what's for dinner!)

So, what about sides?  Here's a list of ideas
1. Chips
2. Any kind of Fruit (depends on sales)
3. Applesauce
4. Cheese and Crackers
5. Goldfish
6. Mini Muffins
7. Pretzels
8. Popcorn
9. Rolls
10. Cheese sticks
11. Hard Boiled Eggs
12. Carrots/Ranch
13. Salad
14. Mini Candy bar/Kisses
15. Cookies
16. Rice Krispy Treats
17. Water melon Slushies

Now, to keep it real, I think only the princess eats anything on the vegetable side of things but I still put it on the table just in case one of the guys decides to taste something!! I also don't serve a sweet every day at lunch so some days it's a nice treat.

We won't even get into snacks! HA!  Actually, they get to pick their own snacks - Poptarts, Cereal, Crackers, fruit, or even a cookie.

What we miss . . or don't miss!

A friend of mine shared a great blog post on Sunday on Facebook.  It spoke words that I've thought and even said.  So, I thought I'd share it here too!

The article is called "You say, I'm going to miss this, but am I really?" and is from Today Parenting Team.

It's basically the concept that when a parent is in the middle of the long, tiring days, someone will often say, "You are going to miss this some day!".  When, in reality, there are a lot of things that I won't miss!  Sure, there are cute things I'll miss - their little voices, the mispronounced words, and tiny little feet.  But some of those other things, I just won't miss!

So, if you feel so inclined take a minute to read this short article - it's a pretty good read.

Sunday Worship - Still

I heard this song while sitting in my truck one evening at the laundry.  Another well worded song by Hillary Scott.

Our Week in photos #22

Here it is, Friday night as I'm typing this, and I'm not even sure where the week went!  I didn't really take photos either!

We . . .
-- worked in our basement
-- went to church
-- relaxed
-- mowed and rearranged a flower bed to make it easier to take care of (for me - the non- gardener!)
-- one kid got a haircut
-- one kid had Tae Kwon DO
-- Went Swimming a couple of times
-- had a board meeting
-- and finished up school

I'm waiting for Josh to get a hair cut in a week and then I'll share our end of the year school photos!

Maybe I'll actually get my camera out more next week and snap some photos.  This is why I really need to update my phone one of these years with one that takes slightly better photos so that I can snap a photo a day for the blog!

I'd also like to say Hello to my  brother Kelly.  :-)  He loves to see his name on my blog!!

Weekly Menu

I've still been really uninspired when it comes to menu planning; just picking up what is on sale and cooking it.  We've had some pretty boring meals!

Friday - Brats, Papa Fries, and Mac and Cheese

And that's as far as I've gotten on my meal planning for the week.  For real.  Even as I'm sitting on a Thursday evening thinking about meals, my mind is not inspired HA!  Maybe tomorrow it will be!

Summer Fun - Week 1

I'm going to follow a similar plan as last year to keep up with my Summer Fun plans.  I actually really enjoyed reading back through last years plans as I was writing up my calenders for this year.

Basically, I will make my master list below and then add comments at the end of the week of what we actually did.  I still have some more things that are coming up to add to our calendar as ideas - and yes, that is what my calendar's really are, just ideas.  It's a place to write down every idea that interests me that we might do.  It doesn't mean we will do all of them (or any of them) but without the master plan, we would do nothing!

May 31st- June 6th

Friday - We have a field trip with our Co-Op to the Road Commission.  It is their 100th year anniversary so there is a day of fun planned plus we get a tour. This was an awesome trip!

Saturday - There is a car show in our town.  We went last year and the boys liked looking at the cars.  The weather this year is iffy so this activity is iffy! We got some pretty powerful storms and the car shows was actually shut down early due to the rain.

Sunday - Nothing is planned :-) This day went exactly as planned and it was marvelous!  After church, the boys and I just relaxed at home and did not much of anything.

Monday - Nate has a haircut; we need to register for the summer reading program; if the weather is nice we will have a little picnic at the park and take our year end photos. Nate got his haircut; we signed up for the reading program; but instead of a picnic, Josh got his favorite Speedway Pizza and Nate got his favorite Mac and Cheese for lunch (Blue Box of Course!) I did take Nate's year end photo with his fresh haircut but I'm waiting to take Josh's after he gets his hair cut in a week and a half - then I'll share!

Tuesday - Swimming.  Nate has asked to go see Endgame (a movie) and Josh doesn't want to see it.  Tuesday's are $5.00 tickets so I might take Nate to see the movie. None of this happened.  Instead, I worked in the yard.

Wednesday - Swimming if the weather is nice We swam!  It was a perfect day for swimming for sure and, bonus, we had the pool to ourselves for a while too!

Thursday - I have a board meeting; I just realized that I scheduled to post on the same day as the last day of the "week" - Thursday! I'll have to alter that next week.  BUT, since the only thing scheduled today is the Board Meeting, I know it will happen :-)

My Kids Summer Plan (Or at least my plan for my kids summer plan!)

Every summer, I always create a plan for my kids.  Some type of goals for them to achieve throughout the summer.  Lets keep it real, we never succeed HA!  But, that doesn't stop me from trying!  I used to plan out school review activities and print off booklets, put it all in binders and plan for them to work on it every day.  Well, my kids don't love school (even homeschoolers don't always love school!) so this concept has never worked well!  Instead, they have some "chunks" they have to do each week.  They can do it all in one day or spread it out over the week but it has to be done!

Here's the plan.
1. Read for 15 minutes a day - this is for Library rewards.  It has to be done to turn their name in!
2. Practice Cursive - this was school year goal but we didn't get far.  Instead, they will have three worksheets to do a week.
3. Math Minute - we worked on these during the year so we will just continue.  Again, 3 pages a week is all they have to do.
4. Work on extra Awana pages - this is specifically for Nate who has a goal to finish extra books.
5. Practice the piano 3 days a week - they will have a song to work on, review their old songs, and also work on learning their notes inside and out.  We are taking the summer off from regular lessons but they have to keep working a little to be ready for fall.

It's a pretty simple plan.  I'm in the process of making a check sheet for each of them to they can mark off each item as they finish it.  If you hear screaming at the end of the week - it's because I've told me kids about this plan HA!

Summer Goals

I've decided to combine June, July and August all into one goal post.  Instead of having monthly goals, I have some goals for the summer.  Now, I might add to the goals throughout the summer or I might not!  But without some goals - I'll end up with none of my projects done.

1. Scrapbooking
--- Figure out how many page protectors I need to completely finish albums.
--- Spend about 4 hours a month specifically scrapbooking.  I want to carve out schedule time to scrapbook.  I'm hoping for at least one 4 hour block each month.
7. Clean out my flower bed and plant the sunflower seeds
8. Read 6 books throughout the summer.  Setting the bar low!
9. Take year end photos of the boys

So for now, this is where it stands.  I'll try to update each month and add any more I come up with along the way!

May Goal Recap

May sure did fly by quickly!  It was busy with the end of the school year and my mom moving!  Here's a recap of my goals!

1.  Finish School.  And I mean everything.  Since my actual goal is May 15th I think getting it done by May 31st should be ok. We did not finish by May 15th but we did finish by May 31st (Ok, we have one 20 minute lesson to finish today but we are counting it done!)
2. Clean the playroom. Sell the chair and ottoman that are in the playroom. Trash the broken recliner that is in the playroom.  Move our current couch into the playroom to make room for a new couch we are getting from my mom that won't fit in her new home.  (this has to be done by May 9th!) The recliner went to the trash; the chair and ottoman are listed for selling and have been for a few weeks so we will see if they sell; the couch is moved so this was done!
3.  Clean the laundry room area.  We are being gifted a washer and dryer but, since I haven't had either in over a year, the laundry room has become a storage room.  I have to clean stuff up and out to make room for the delivery people to actually, well, deliver. (this has to be done by May 9th also!) This is in progress!  We removed an old loveseat that had seen better days.  We are still working on organizing some things but it will be done within the next week or so :-)
4.  Wash all of the upstairs rugs - I usually do this a few times a year and has summer approaches, it is time to get the winter dirt and salt out of the rugs.  I figure I should do this while I'm still making trips to the laundromat! This is done!
5. Finish the decor in the dining room - just have to have Darryl hang the last few things since he needs to add anchors to a few things (and, well, hang things straight!) This is done!
6. I have four simple scrapbook goals for this month - a) count how many page protectors I need to finish up some books that don't have them b) Sort the last batch of photos I order last month c) put the digital pages in the protectors I bought last month and add them to the album. d) Order April 2019 photos as well as the next month I'm on in 2014 (I think it's 2014 - I'll double check before I order! )  I'm trying to stay current on my photo order and also work on catching up on some other years - it makes scrapbooking easier when I actually have the photos! I did nothing scrapbook related :-(
7. Plan our summer - I did this last year and it really helped me focus on some specific things and make sure we didn't miss anything we really wanted to do ! This is done!
8. Finally set up my dental cleaning - I was going to do this earlier but decided to wait until my mom was here so I have somewhere to drop the kids while I go to the dentist :-) Still need to make that phone call.
9. Get Josh into the orthodontist.  We've had a couple of delays due to needing a baby tooth pulled; state testing coming up (I wanted him to focus on that and not on his teeth) to name a few things but he should be in braces by the end of the month. Both boys actually started the process in May.
10.  Plant some flowers.  Darryl and I were just talking about this - how we'd like to have some nice flowers/plants but neither one of us enjoy yard work HA!  I do have the goal of planting some sunflowers this year - they are easy and we all enjoy them - and maybe some wild flowers too.  Also, I have a deck planter I want to get some plants in as well.  I also saw a friend did some veggies in some pots . .. I might do that with some zucchini (yes she does hers in a pot) and some beans maybe?  Just some things I like to eat fresh. There are flower seeds planted in my deck planter but that's as far as I've gotten.

I also had to do a bunch of moving around in the garage because we were going to get our garage door fixed but, that didn't happen before my mom moved so now we have her garage stuff too!  Once her garage is built, we will get ours fixed and be able to really clean it out.

Our Week in Photos #21

Here's our Week!

On Saturday we celebrated my mom's birthday!  We helped her do some things at her new home, had steaks on the grill for dinner and cupcakes for dessert.
The best part was the candle.  I bought the candles that re lite and it was beyond funny.  Just about the time she thought they were blown out, they would start burning again HA!

We wrapped up the last of our school projects which were science project for both boys.

We had a Field Trip with our Co-op to our local road commission as they were celebrating 100 years of service!  We had an amazing tour, great food, and lots of fun.

We also enjoyed the pool.  This was actually our second time in the pool but on Friday evening we had it to ourselves and it was amazing.  We just plain love the pool.
